With the recent effort of nearly every company to digitize their business, more and more is done by applications. The business is supported by a fabric of digital business processes. However, human activities such as approvals, reviews, decisions to be taken depending on changing circumstances are still key for the good execution of those processes. The performance of your business processes, your customers satisfaction, your ability to seize opportunities, rely not only on the technology you put in place but also on the engagement of your employees and customers and how you inform them about what is happening and what they have to do!

That’s why a notification mechanism is needed to dispatch alerts, information, decisions, tasks to the right groups or individuals.

Risks associated with poorly managed notifications

If you consider managers of a medium sized enterprise, they usually have to deal with requests from at least 5 different systems covering travels, IT and application access, expenses, HR, and procurement. Those systems are sending notifications according to rules. Those rules have probably been done by different people from IT, each one being knowledgeable of the specific application to configure. The end result is a multitude of notifications received by emails or through different channels.

The usual approach consisting of letting every application create and deliver their own notifications leads to several issues:

• Monitoring and rapidly improving notification rules for better business outcomes is nearly impossible
• It is difficult for the business to get notified of what matters to them (opportunities or threats) in a self service manner. They usually need to ask IT to update a system, which could be a long process by itself.
• Employees get frustrated by the time spent with the flow of notifications on the different channels
• The overall efficiency of business processes can be impacted by poorly managed notifications leading to waiting time, errors and additional costs.

What does Project Notify offer?

At the TIBCO Labs, we started Project Notify with few goals in mind:

• Enhance any application with advanced notifications, providing centralized alerts, notices, approval or decision request, task reminders, etc.
• Expose a documented API so developers have a standard way to add notifications to their applications, or hack the solution to customize for their specific needs.
• Make it easy for applications to send those notifications to individual or groups.
• Allow application to simply publish events and let Project Notify generates the notifications based on rules and templates.
• Support the notions of due dates, jeopardy indicator, delegation and so on.
• Centralize the configuration and exposes an intuitive user interface to let business configure the notification rules and message templates.
• Provide a Mobile UI, offering a preferred channel for end users, with a aggregated view of all their notifications and effective ways to act on them to better prioritize and respond.
